Why June 26 Matters
June 26, 1960, is a historic and proud day for the people of Somaliland. On this date, Somaliland gained independence from British colonial rule and became a free and sovereign nation for the first time. Although Somaliland later voluntarily united with Somalia on July 1, 1960, that union eventually collapsed, leading Somaliland to reassert its independence in 1991.
Today, June 26 remains a powerful symbol of freedom, national pride, and the ongoing pursuit of international recognition. It is a day to honor our past, celebrate our resilience, and look forward to a brighter future.
